I agree with Doug on using silverjaw. It is extra money, but it yields a tight little package with the mSATA SSD.
@Mark Van Der Pol has a powered SATA drive running for large capacity. He may wish to comment further.

Patrick,
as far as hardware connections you can use the onboard sata connector or use a lure. in my case i bought a silverjaw lure.

and i used a samsung 850 on the m2 / msata connector.
as far as the steps to setup the flashdrive with bsd i'm gonna have to step through the process again myself since it has been over a year since the last time i did it and do not off the top of my head remember all the steps however i'll update tomorrow afternoon after i've gone through the process again.

Hi,
I was playing a bit more with the Minnowboard last weekend.
a) I tried a FreeBSD install onto a USB Flashdrive but the boot did not work yet, maybe I miss something. I was basically stuck in the UEFI shell, only now seeing the fs0: command to try booting from the new drive.
b) Instead of working with a USB flash drive, the SATA drive option sounds interesting. Yet, I can't quickly see what cables I need, esp. for powering the SATA drive. Anyone has pointers here?
Thanks a lot!
Patrick
