I turned off “automatic bounce processing” and am in parallel setting up a backup mail list in case we need to switch in desperation.

Okay, thanks for looking into this.
By the way, elinux is not the only site seeing this issue. The gumstix mailing list has been making similar complaints recently. My guess is that something changed wrt google mail recently :-(

This is strange. There were a number of email domains that bounced out yesterday…not just gmail. I will add back all the addresses dropped within the past 24 hours, and will work with mailman support to see if we can resolve. I might just bump up the bounce score temporarily too.

So I got this from another list and worked with the list owner to try and figure out why mailman was bouncing it.. In this case, the admin mentioned the following. It seemed to have something to do with the IPv6 settings. This might be helpful for the list admins, and if you forward any message that you got.
...Message thread ...
Then the actual log message might be helpful for your, see below my
sig. As far as I could see in our log files, the gmail inbound servers
are not all in IPv6. Those that are not will accept messages even if
the IPv6 PTR record is not correct.

Is there a way to whitelist google? Can't we assume google isn't a
