thank you for this information. My usecase for the MinnowBoard is to switch from UEFI to U-Boot to enable PXE boot. I know that I can flash U-Boot using the UEFI shell, but I want to be prepared for the (likely) case that I'm not getting the U-Boot image built just right on the first try.

I see. In this case, I will go for the simple option and just order an SPI Hook. May I recommend that the link posted by Trevor earlier in this thread be added to the eLinux-Wiki, replacing the abstract hint at the Flyswatter2?

That sounds intriguing -- I'd like to study this option further for future use cases. Is there more information available on how to use the SPI Hook in these scenarios (or will this all become apparent once my 'hook has been delivered)?
