[MinnowBoard] image crashes (grub2?) with ld-is-gold

If I build an OE image for my turbot it works perfectly fine. If I then
edit my conf/local.conf to include:

    DISTRO_FEATURES_append = " ld-is-gold"

the image appears to crash just as it's starting grub2. I've attached
what I see on my console. As you can see grub2 appears to have just
started but doesn't do much more than print its banner. Oddly enough,
usually grub2's banner is at the top of my console. In other words, it's
almost as if the "clear screen" command got missed somehow.

Asking OE to switch from the regular linker to the gold linker causes
most of the packages to need rebuilding. As a test I did another build
where I wiped out everything but my conf/ directory (tmp, cache,
sstate-cache) and rebuilt from scratch -- same result.

Also, and this is a bit anecdotal, while hung in this state my board's
heatsink gets pretty hot.

Anyone seen this or have any tips on debugging?
