Thanks for the tip! As it turns out, I'm using a passive HDMI splitter:

and it's causing me issues. If I plug my MinnowBoardMAX directly into my
monitor, then apply power to the board, the HDMI works fine. I'm still
curious to know how others are solving this issue with the level
shifters, it would be nice to be able to continue using my splitter (or
maybe a powered splitter?).
