I'm still a little confused by "nothing happens"?

If you do:

$su   <enter>
$    <-- does a new line appear?

If it does, then you're at a root prompt now.

Also try:

$su - root   <enter>
$   <--- root prompt

Note also that Android 5.1 was released yesterday.
