Sage Electronic Engineering has updated its free Sage Open Source Package
download for the MinnowBoard MAX, which should allow for flashing the boot
image without a hardware device.
“It is a workaround; we just explain how developers can use Intel’s flash
application to update the UEFI firmware with SageBIOS,” said Sage CEO Scott
Hoot. “We are looking for feedback from the MinnowBoard community on how we
can make it easier to load our open source boot solution, as well as what
other operating systems and distros they would like supported.
The demo boot ROM available on the Sage website (www.se-eng.com/minnow/
<https://t.yesware.com/tl/076388f81c57bc366355c7952de1673096ededf5/e9b00e4525c9af3ed36958ccf8898a92/5913795c7ccf7ddb3ec8f1e79d01c6d5?ytl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.se-eng.com%2Fminnow%2F>)
comes with instructions on updating the UEFI solution installed on the
MinnowBoard MAX, allowing the Intel flash application to be used. Sage’s
built-in flash application continues to work for all other OSP downloads on
its website.
There are also instructions on how to proceed with a hardware flashing
tool, the preferred method for firmware testing and development.
The binary SageBIOS boot ROM image, which is flashed on the development
board’s SPI Flash device, is based on the Intel® Firmware Support Package
(Intel® FSP) and coreboot® open source initialization. The SageBIOS OSP
replaces UEFI firmware that comes installed on both versions of MinnowBoard
MAX and will support booting a greater variety of operating systems,
including FreeBSD and a variety of RTOS, as well as legacy operating
systems such as older versions of Microsoft® Windows and even DOS.
The SageBIOS OSP will support all the operating systems supported by the
native UEFI firmware, such as Windows® and Linux®. In addition, the
SageBIOS OSP will boot both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems with a
single boot image.
Sage would like to thank the MinnowBoard community members for their
patience.
