Between tax day and a three days of a horrendous project schedule, I was finally able to get back to this.
I have an OSEPP FTDI breakout board, which I used to connect to the MBM
Port settings:
115200
N81
no flow control
Tried it on two different computers Win7 & Win8.1 using both Telnet & Putty
Unable to connect to the MBM

You should start off with the UART console to determine if the device is booting:

Ok, I guess it's an HDMI issue. Another responder suggested a different cable/adapter. Any specific suggestions here? If that doesn't work, what next?
Thanks

Yes, you should get the shell without any SD card or USB stick.
I regularly netboot mine without having either inserted and I can
interact with the console.
