You should start off with the UART console to determine if the device is booting:

Ok, I guess it's an HDMI issue. Another responder suggested a different cable/adapter. Any specific suggestions here? If that doesn't work, what next?

Yes, you should get the shell without any SD card or USB stick.
I regularly netboot mine without having either inserted and I can
interact with the console.
