That is exactly, how I'm using it. Got power to SSD from J2 jumper

Only +5V (red wire) and ground from SATA power cable is used for SSDs.
J2 should be fine up to 1A current loads ~ 5W. It should be fine for
most SSDs except of largest ones (eg > 480GB).
Ideally consult values from your particular SSD datasheet.
